Making Wool Sing

Dyeing and hooking silk and velvet

Making Wool Sing

I love vibrant colors. And nothing says “Wow!” like pairing silk and velvet with your wool. I have been using silk in my rugs for several years, and I love the movement and shimmer created by combining silk with matching wool. The fabrics sing to me.

Playing matchmaker for silk and wool happened quite by accident. My business partner Connie Bateman and I like dyeing natural wool all sorts of brilliant colors for rugs. At the end of a dye session, I had a few white scarves on hand and I decided to use up the leftover dyes by dyeing them. The beautiful results made us realize that we could dye silk —and velvet!—with the same dyes as wools and get delightful, vibrant, shimmering fabrics.
