What could possibly be better than international pancake day, pet day, or doughnut day? The answer: International Rug Hooking Day. RSVP to Rug Hooking magazine's Facebook event and help us celebrate this amazing day in the wool industry!

This special event was born in 1994 with a group of international rug hooking friends who dreamed of a network of rug hookers across the globe. On December 4th, 1994, they founded the International Guild of Handhooking Rugmakers (TIGHR). This large group of fiber artists has become the hub for all things rug hooking; their work includes organizing hooking events, aggregating resources for members, and promoting the craft in many different countries, from Mexico to Australia to England. Two decades later, TIGHR held a 20th anniversary International Hook-In day, and the idea took off. Now every year, rug hookers around the world are invited to celebrate rug hooking—its history, its artists, and its positive impact on people's lives.

Here's TIGHR's mission statement from their website:

"The International Guild of Handhooking Rugmakers is a global organization of creative people who come together in friendship to share ideas, and to explore the different techniques of the art of rugmaking using a variety of fibres."

A note from Susan Feller, member of TIGHR:

December 4 has been proclaimed International Rughooking Day. Honoring the anniversary of TIGHR-The International Guild of Handhooking Rugmakers' formation in 1994, the focus is to spread friendship exploring the different rugmaking techniques used worldwide. Call a friend, meet for lunch, put up a display in a public space, demonstrate, write an article .... Spread the art/craft in your community.

In the past two years Australians have met at the beach for a holiday party, Japanese exhibited rug hooking in Tokyo, in England tea and rugs were shared in Penzance, a cyberspace conversation between a West Virginian and Australians connected friends, in Canada demonstrations were in day care centers and with school programs. What will you do around December 4?
