Readers’ Gallery: Inspired in Avignon
A travel memento from Anita White
For years, I have been writing about Anita White’s beautiful rugs that were inspired by textiles, but in May of 2019, on a Viking Cruise of the Rhone River, she found a new source of inspiration at the Palace of the Popes in Avignon
ANITA: "I like functional art, like quilts and textiles. So typically, I’m not a big museum person. I like them, but many museums don’t hold the kind of art that draws me in. But these floor tiles had a function, and they were also beautiful. They were all individually hand-painted—120,000 different tiles. Of course, some were broken because they date back to the fourteenth century. They are just remarkable, and so I thought this would make a lovely memory rug of our trip."
