Marilyn Bottjer: Artist and Teacher

By: Story by Linda Rae Coughlin/Photography by John Bottjer

Audubon Swans, 32" x 22", hand-dyed wool fabric on linen backing. Adapted from prints by John James Audubon (Trumpeter Swan, Immature, Plate 376; Trumpeter Swan, Adult, Plate 406; Tundra Swan, Common American Swan, Plate 411) and hooked by Marilyn Bottjer, Eastchester, New York, 2013.

As an artist and teacher, Marilyn Bottjer has had a profound influence on the hundreds if not thousands of rug hooking students she has taught for the past 45 years. As a teacher, she transmits information in an open and honest way. Teaching twice a week in her home, she encourages an open door to learning and designing original rugs. Through her art, she has formed many friendships that have lasted a lifetime and span the globe.
