On a Journey: Susan L. Feller's Vision from West Virginia

Reader's Gallery

By: Linda Rae Coughlin

Living in a Whirlwind, 19" x 20", ArtWool background, hand-hooked fabric in a variety of size cuts on linen, embroidery stitches, synthetic fabric and yarns, groundhog vertebrae and tooth.  Designed and hooked by Susan Feller, Augusta, West Virginia, 2010.

Many words come to mind when describing Susan Feller's roles in the rug hooking world: artist, teacher, supplier, author, promoter, and self-sufficient woman are just a few. Her artist statement is telling: "Working with fibers connects me with generations of artisans' spirits. Due to the slow, repetitive process, there is time to dwell on the natural subjects in my art and the materials I work with. Now living in West Virginia, I have come full circle back to the farm and rural lifestyle of my youth."
