A Rug for a President

How one rug is helping to cure disease

By: Mary F. Wortman

Waging Peace, Fighting Disease, Building Hope, 24" x 32", #3-cut wool on rug warp.  An adaption of Nip Rogers cover art of the 2008 Annual Report of The Carter Center.  Hooked by Susan Naples, Santa Ana, California, 2009.

Award-winning fiber artist Susan Naples presented one of her creations to President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter to be a part of a lively annual auction held at the 2010 Winter Weekend to raise funds for The Carter Center. The Center's mission is "Waging Peace, Fighting Disease, Building Hope."

Naples is a long-time supporter of The Carter Center. She was inspired to fuse her two passions, philanthropy and rug hooking, when she received the Carter Center annual report in the mail: "Nip Rogers's art spoke to me and inspired me to create the piece because it's so full of life and color."

She donated it to The Carter Center so others could enjoy its energy and continue to be mindful of the Center's mission.
