From Stained Glass to Wool

An Arts and Crafts Project Adorns a New Home

By: Story by Gloria McPherson/Photography by Impact XPozures

Stained Glass #1, 34 1/4" x 15 3/4", #6-cut wool, silk velvet, silk, and wool yarn on linen. Designed and hooked by Gloria McPherson, New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania, 2016.

Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright designs and adapted from a pattern in Prairie Designs for Stained Glass Windows: 10th Anniversary Edition, by Alex Spatz. The front of the book makes it clear that he especially intended the book for folks who make stained glass designs out of glass, but it says, “The designs in this book are intended for the use of stained glass enthusiasts. They may not be mass produced and/or sold at wholesale by manufacturers without the written permission of the copyright owner.” I took that to mean that his concern is that the designs not be used to make a ton of money for somebody else. I am, after all, a stained-glass enthusiast and I am using it in “[my] own stained-glass project.” It just happens that I work with fiber and not with glass!

A recent move allowed me to redecorate, and I decided to indulge my love of all things Arts and Crafts. My only regret was that my new (old) house is not a bungalow! I donated some furniture to a local non-profit, but I knew nobody would want a beat-up bench I had been using for years as a coffee table. What to do? I could always find another coffee table, but for some reason I didn’t want to get rid of the old one. It had been such a bargain!
