Camps and Workshops

By: Anne-Marie Littenberg

What:   Hooked in the Mountains XVI

When:  November 10–17, 2012

Where: Shelburne Museum, Shelburne, Vermont

Over 30 years ago, a group of Vermonters got together on a town green, strung a clothesline, and spent a day showing each other their hooked rug creations. Today, the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild has over 500 members throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan, but its heart and soul remains in Vermont.

This year’s Hooked in the Mountains XVI is slated for November 10–17 at Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont. Exhibits will be held in the Round Barn, while Hooked in the Mountains workshops will take place in a variety of buildings on the museum’s grounds. In addition, a wonderful assortment of guest speakers will educate and entertain, leading discussions throughout the eight-day-long schedule of events. A wide assortment of vendors will provide goods such as wool (dyed and off the bolt), patterns, dyes, and every imaginable tool you could possibly wish for all your rug hooking adventures.

Guest speakers for 2012 include Jule Marie Smith, Kris McDermett, Peg Irish, Amy Oxford, and Donna Hrkman, among many others. The Guild is most proud to announce that the exhibit will include works by featured artists Elizabeth Guth (Tinmouth, Vermont), Cathy Henning (Burlington, Ontario, Canada), and Ann Winterling (East Concord, New Hampshire). In addition to the featured artists, attendees will enjoy over 400 newly hooked rugs by the Guild’s membership.

The instructors for Hooked in the Mountains XVI have put together a wonderful variety of classes. New this year is a series of three classes that will be team-taught by Rae Harrell (“Evolution”), Diane Learmonth (“Alice Neel – Women”), and Diane Phillips (“Triptych”). The three classes may be taken together as a 9-day series or individually. All three teachers will be in attendance during each of the classes.
