The Art of the Series

Collections of hooked pieces create works of art where the total is greater than the sum of the parts

By: Carol Koerner and Roslyn Logsdon

A Sweet Suite, nine 11" x 9" panels, #3-cut wool on linen.  Designed and hooked by Carol Koerner, Bethesda, Maryland, 2011.

Series hooking is an art form in which the wall behind the rugs becomes an integral part of the hooking. Each hooked piece is separated from the others by a definitive amount of wall space and hung in a particular order designated by the artist. The parts are meant to be hung together as one wall hanging—never as separate hooked pieces. In this article, we take a look at the evolution of two artists’ series works.
