My maternal grandparents met in a Texas honky-tonk in the early 1930s, and, as they say in Texas, it was love at first sight. My grandfather was so smitten he got a tattoo on his arm at a carnival just a few days after they met. The tattoo was of a beautiful cowgirl, with Texas Ann inscribed on his arm. The only problem was that Ann was from Tennessee. Nevertheless, Ann was suitably pleased at his attempt to impress her, and they enjoyed a 40-year whirlwind romance.
