Fumiyo considers rug hooking's connection to recycling to be one of its attractions. She used that aspect to introduce the craft to others who are concerned about waste in the environment. Hooking rugs is one of many ways to reduce fabric trash.

Her statement about Bamboo explains her stand. "It is wonderful to make a fine work with new, dyed wool cloths, and on the other hand, it is a miracle to change the old used clothes which are destined to be thrown away into beautiful works, treasuring our limited precious natural resources of the earth. That is why I used my grandmother's old kimonos to make the original design I displayed there, Bamboo."
