"Autumn is my favorite time of year, and I have always been in love with fall leaves. When I saw Jane Flynn’s November rug as done by Helen Connolly, I was so excited I took a class with her to learn her amazing dyeing techniques.  I learned a lot but felt I couldn’t improve on her color plan and eventually abandoned the project.

A few years later I found Lib Callaway’s Eastham Moors pattern and visualized the leaf rug of my dreams. Its big bold leaves fit perfectly with my preference for wider strips. The open weave center left room to improvise a hit and miss variation of my own choosing. Color planning is my absolute favorite part of rug hooking, and I like to see how much color I can hook in while still keeping a unified look. Some of my earlier rugs have faded a bit, and so I hook more vibrant colors to compensate.

The center of the rug was a joy to cut and hook. At first it looked like a basket weave, but I found it was more like the Rail Fence quilt pattern. Recovering from a knee operation, I had the perfect time to sit and hook, enabling me to finish the center in three weeks. The rug was then put away for several months to work on another project for a rug camp. The outer border was worked on sporadically last year so I can’t tell how long it actually took to finish."
