"A Sauder Village challenge propelled this rug. I responded to a Happy Holidays theme with Veteran's Day. It is my tribute to those who have served in the military. I wanted to show not only the pride of this veteran, but also some of the conflict he may have felt. He wears with pride his old WWI uniform for a parade, but his eyes show sadness. The flag he holds was from his son's casket; he died in Korea. So the mixture of pride and sadness in his face is important to the feeling of this piece. I re-drew the sky to show diagonal clouds moving across the background, as diagonal lines indicate unrest or turmoil. I hooked a traditional wood frame around the image and added gold stars in each corner. I know how important our veterans are, and I wanted to show the respect they deserve."
