"In preparation for the Old Cape Cod Rug School, I wanted to take on a challenge knowing I would have the guidance of my teacher, Nancy Blood. I came across this pattern online and immediately knew this was it. Hours were spent in preparation gathering and dyeing the wool into eight-value swatches. A trick I found was to stay focused on small areas and not get overwhelmed, especially with such a large cardinal hooked in many values of a single color. As the cardinal was hooked with overdyed rug wool, the poinsettia was done with swatches dyed with the same formula but over orange wool. This made the distinction and the relationship between the two motifs."
