Abstract Rugs

For a Change of Pace

Abstract Rugs

In my early rug hooking days, a large number of rugs I saw in books and magazines were traditional floral rugs done mostly in #3 and #4 cuts. My first few rugs included a realistic bobcat and a McGown crewel design, which I did totally in #3 cut. The crewel design is the only commercial pattern I’ve ever purchased. My rugs are mostly original designs or adaptations of paintings or other items.
Eventually, unrealistic or abstract paintings and images began to intrigue me as possible rug designs. So I ventured forth and modified part of a black-and-white geometric fractal design, which I hooked as my Fractal. This rug was done in shades of pink and purple, with a touch of gold for some contrast, giving this piece a colorful and lively look.
