These Aint Your Mommas T-Shirts

Actually, they might be. I bought them at thrift stores, so they were somebody’s T-shirts before I got my hands on them. I wanted to hook a portrait of my mom based on one of my favorite pictures of her, taken on her wedding day in August 1950. I love how candid the photo is, showing her impish 18-year-old personality, beginning a new life with the man she loved.

The challenge was that I was going to hook it with T-shirts. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to dye or spin the colors I needed, I was going to have to find them. Fortunately, with two billion T-shirts produced every year, that wasn’t going to be a problem. Anything you can hook with yarn or wool fabric strips, you can hook with T-shirts. Just go down the aisle in your local thrift store with your color palette in mind, and you are sure to find what you need.
