I always find it interesting to learn how a rug design evolves and becomes a finished rug. Remembering the process on this one, there were so many influences that drew me in one direction, then another, until the final decisions were committed to paper.
First of all, I love ‘sayings’ and I collect them everywhere. By taking a picture when I see one I want to remember, by adding them to Notes on my phone if I hear something inspiring, and by digging around online as I look for the perfect inspiration for my monthly online newsletters, I have acquired a well-rounded collection. I was sure one or more of them would make it into a rug someday. But life didn’t take me that way at all, at least not this time. Turns out, creating my own words was the correct choice for this rug and it made the entire project that much more enjoyable.
Now I don’t necessarily love hooking letters, but I felt sure that coming up with a relevant saying of my own which made me smile would lessen my hesitation. Also, one that would be worthy of being on a rug! The fact that the saying I came up with was so specific to rug hooking that it really makes sense only to a rug hooker was fine with me; I wasn’t trying to change the world with one little grouping of words.
