"My subject matter started with the simple idea of a personal doodle that I had drawn that caught my interest. I decided to enlarge the drawing making it both oversized and dramatic while keeping all the fun and interest of the original doodle.
One of the main concerns was to keep the integrity of the original doodle in this large format. I wanted to keep all the original flaws of the rug, so it stays as a doodle and not a perfect rendition of one. By doing this, I kept the spontaneity alive.
Then by using colors and patterns that complemented each other, I attempted to add visual interest to enhance the original sketch. I liked how all these elements kept one's eye moving around the design in an interesting and pleasing manner. I liked the visual movement that was achieved and wanted to enhance this further by silhouetting the shape of my rug. This was achieved by finishing the rug by cording it and then by whipstitching the edge."
