Michel—Marcilly sur Eure

Dimensions: 23" x 30"
Materials: #3-cut wool on linen
Adapted with permission from a photograph by Monique Hafrey and hooked by Carol Koerner, Bethesda, Maryland, 2014.
Featured in: Celebration XXV

"The textures of an old shutter and mottled wall were the reasons I chose to base a hooking on a black & white snapshot taken by my friend, Monique, when she was a teenager in France circa 1940. I added another window on the left, a geranium on the window sill and suggested an interior. It was thrilling to depict worn peeling paint using only shades of faded blue. Trying to hook faded red checked curtains was a big challenge. I used dull pink curved stripes horizontally to suggest the faded checks. Monique was extremely happy with the hooking."
