Breaking Out
One Rug Hooker's Foray into Art Adaptations
Marion Sachs, at the age of 87, is breaking out of her mold. She recently started hooking the intricately detailed and brightly colored illustrations of David Galchutt, a well-known illustrator who is best known for his whimsical, stylized, and colorful images for children’s toys and publications, primarily Highlights for Children.
Marion has been hooking rugs for 15 years and, before that, was an accomplished quilter. She has hooked over 25 rugs and dyes all of her wool by hand. She usually hooks large area or room-sized rugs with floral motifs and scrolls. Three of Marion’s rugs, Romanian Convent, Tulay, and Victorian were featured in RHM’s Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs.
