Rug Design

Going Beyond the Photograph

By: Martha Rosenfeld
Rug Design

For many of us, photographs provide an accessible way to design our own original rugs. There are no drawing skills required, and the photograph does some of the design work for us. We can take a photo from our family history, travel, nature, or some other topic of interest, and transform it into a unique piece of fiber art. However, there’s so much more that can be done with photos to make a stronger rug pattern. You’re going to spend many hours hooking your rug, so putting a bit of extra effort into the design process at the beginning can provide you with a design that goes beyond the photograph.
