"Little Blue Heron was assigned to me as a 'show and tell' project for Western Teachers’ Workshop. I was not familiar with little blue herons, so I looked for visuals on the internet. I found that the pattern was based on an Audubon painting and happily used his colour plan. I dyed several versions of a painted sky until I realized I wanted a soft morning sky. I found that a dip-dyed sky was more to my liking. Before I finished hooking this piece, my mentor, June Burkhart, bought the rug! She knew I would need to show the rug a bit and was happy to wait until she could take possession. The reeds behind the heron were an exciting part of the rug: dull greens, textures and Elizabeth Black black, criss-crossing to create depth."
