Dear Beginning Rug Hooker: How to Hook a Sunflower Inch Mat

With dyeing instructions

By: Gail Dufresne
How to Hook a Sunflower Inch Mat

I designed my sunflower inch mat with beginners in mind, so it has a little bit of everything in it, from a finely shaded flower with curving petals to a grid of straight lines. If getting just the right shading in the sunflower gets tiresome, you can hook straight lines for a break (although for some, hooking straight lines is more of a challenge than curved ones). I also used a variety of materials, from recycled Pendleton shirts to textures to solid wools. Each is a little different from the other and may take some getting used to. For example, when you are just learning to pull up loops, you may tend to get your hook caught in loosely woven textures more than in tightly woven solid wools.
