Young people in the 21st century spend more time using technology and on mobile devices than ever before. The joy and sense of accomplishment in learning to make a handmade object is becoming lost to an entire generation. Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design wants to turn this trend on its head by repositioning rug hooking as cool and contemporary craft; after all, rug hooking is the original upcycling. Since many other forms of traditional craft have seen a renaissance in recent years this seems possible; for example, knitting, needle felting, and other fiber arts are seeing a significant increase in popularity. Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design thinks rug hooking might just need a little push into the limelight.
