"I needed a project for a workshop and doodled the geometric center of this rug on a beach in Florida. I have a fondness for black cats (Alice was a special one, a bold kitten who moved onto our front porch in Brooklyn in 1979), and I was so pleased with the dog border on Diamond in the Square, I just decided to do it again with cats in classic cat poses. The palette began with a desire to use up miscellaneous textures in the geometric center, but when it came to the border, the black cats seemed to call out for orange!"
