"My grandmother lived on Machias Seal Island near Grand Manan. Her father was the lighthouse keeper. She met my grandfather, Jim Balmer, the Captain of the Clayola (a schooner), when he delivered a load of coal. Jim Balmer stayed for a couple of days. When he left, my grandmother wrote in her diary, 'and that ends the Clayola and Captain Balmer at Machias Seal Island.' Later she corrected her entry, 'That does not end Captain Balmer at Machias Seal Island.' She married him and had three daughters. My mother was one of them. I went to Machias Seal Island in the summer of 2000."
